Hi, I’m Mr. Majeed, and this is Math Balloon!
I have over 1,000 hours of experience as a math tutor, as well as 500+ hours of experience in the classroom.
For more than 15 years, I have helped students sharpen their math skills – students struggling in class and needing extra support; students getting ready for the next class or reviewing the last one; and students who are preparing for standardized tests (like the SAT or ACT) or math contests (like MATHCOUNTS, AMC 8, or AMC 10/12).
I also teach at Art of Problem Solving’s AoPS Academy, leading classes from Honors 5th-grade Math to High School Contest Math. And I’ve been a volunteer math coach, a math club coordinator, and a lead problem writer for a local math contest.
How I work with students:
- Understand the student’s situation. I gauge what they’ve learned in the past (looking for gaps in understanding) as well as how they feel about math.
- Customize instruction for the student. I adapt my teaching methods to meet the student’s needs, short-term and long-term, both in the beginning and as the student grows.
- Leverage technology. We use collaborative virtual whiteboards, which remain available to students after the session is over. Email confirmations and automated reminders (optionally, by text message) make scheduling clear and easy.
- Keep it light, informal, and interactive. I ask lots of questions and welcome the students’ questions too; and I tell plenty of dad jokes – beware). Students can also ask questions that come up between sessions.
- Make it easy on the family. The first lesson with every student is free. Payments can be made directly on this site. Parents can ask questions too, to help you help your kids.
Before I started teaching, I received a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Caltech and a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington, and I spent 20 years in the software industry.
Thanks for “popping” in! (Hmm ok maybe not the most helpful balloon pun…. :))
